Area Information

Des Arc's history began when French traders came down the White River in the early 1700s. The first known settlers around 1810 were Creoles named Watts and East. Fur was the top commodity being sold on the New Orleans market as trappers made their way along the White River.

Some earlier names for the settlement of Des Arc are Des Arcs, the plural for the above translation, Des Arques, Desarc, Desare, McNulty's Bluff, Des Arcs Bluff and Dezark Bluff. It was not until after the Civil War that the name Des Arc was accepted among all.

Des Arc is in Prairie County, which was first a part of Arkansas County, and then Pulaski County. In 1846, Governor Thomas S. Drew approved the creation of Prairie County. Des Arc was officially incorporated in 1854. In the fall of 1858, legislators entertained the thought of Des Arc becoming the capital of the state and missed out by only one vote.

County industries after the Civil War were fishing, timber, steamboat trade, railroading, farming, mussels, canneries, stave mills, cotton gins, flour and more. In 1903 rice came to Prairie County and slowly became one of the major grains grown. Today, farming is the chief industry of Des Arc and the surrounding areas of Prairie County.

The Prairie County Museum is a facility that boasts new state-of-the-art exhibits showcasing the influence of the lower White River on settlement and commerce in the region from 1831 to 1931. The Lower White River Museum in Des Arc also offers information on pioneer life along the White River.

Another historic attraction is the Rock Island Depot, also known as Hazen Depot. And if you're in more of a festive mood, you'll enjoy the Steamboat Days Festival that takes place in Des Arc every year.

Our rural school district offers many advantages that larger schools do not have. Our students enjoy the advantages of the Des Arc Elementary School and the Des Arc Junior-Senior High School.

The Des Arc Medical Clinic is a primary care and preventative health clinic managed by Central Arkansas Hospital. Central Arkansas Hospital is located in Searcy, Arkansas, 30 miles north-northwest. We are served by the Des Arc Health Center and the Prairie County Health Unit.

Great hunting abounds in the Des Arc/White River area. You'll have to check out the White River Game Management Area, the Cache River Refuge, Black Swamp and Wattensaw Game Management Area only minutes from downtown Des Arc. Game like deer, rabbit, squirrel, duck and goose abound in these areas.

You can also get your lines wet at Lake Des Arc, White River, Cache River and Bayou Des Arc, which all provide plenty of opportunities for fishing enthusiasts. The River Front Park in Des Arc provides a public boat ramp to provide access to the White River. 320-acre Lake Des Arc, only 5 miles north of Des Arc, is in the 953-acre Lake Des Arc Wildlife Management Area and offers primitive campsites as well as campsites with electrical hookups. Opportunities here also include limited hunting plus fishing and bird watching.
